Lowe's, one of the largest home-improvement retailers in the United States, will temporarily cease operations at all of its U.S. stores later this month.

The company announced that all Lowe's locations will close for 24 hours on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, to give employees a day off to spend with family. The move joins Lowe's among a number of national chains taking similar steps to celebrate the holiday.

"I am extremely proud of the commitment of our 300,000 associates who support our communities as well as provide outstanding customer service — not just in the spring, but all year long. In honor of the continued hard work of our teams, we are pleased to offer them a well-deserved day off so they can celebrate Easter with their loved ones," Lowe's Chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison said in a statement.

How many Lowe's stores are there in the U.S.? As of March 2025, Lowe's operates 1,751 stores in the United States. Texas has the most at 144, followed by Florida at 132. In comparison, Home Depot operates more than 2,000 stores, with California, Texas and Florida leading the pack in terms of store numbers.

The move mirrors previous holiday closures from the company, which has consistently closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, the decision to pause for Easter underscores a shift toward recognizing the spring holidays as part of broader workplace wellness strategies.

Despite physical stores being closed, Lowe's customers will still be able to shop online through Lowes.com. The company's website will remain active during the one-day pause in physical operations.

Closures during the holidays are not uncommon among major U.S. retailers. In 2024, JCPenney, Kohl's, Macy's and Michaels also closed for Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, chains such as Walmart, CVS and Trader Joe's remained open.

Why Are Stores Closed on Easter Sunday?

In the United States, many retailers choose to close on Easter Sunday as a sign of respect for the religious significance of the holiday and to provide employees with a day of rest.

Easter, a major Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is traditionally celebrated as a family and faith-focused occasion.

Although it is not a federal holiday, Easter Sunday is recognized in the retail calendar as a day when foot traffic is low, especially in the morning.
